I have been a member of this gym for nearly 2 years. It's the worst gym I have ever been a member at. The only reason I have stayed is the location and my favorite cycle class (shoutout to Abbey for being the entire reason I'm still a member at this gym). The space is cramped and they are always moving things around and doing renovation. They have a lot of space not used throughout the week in their Thrive studio, but they want to push everyone to be thrive members so you can't use it. Machines and equipment broken for weeks on end with 0 repair timelines. One of the two seated row machines has been out of service for a month. Assisted pull up machine down for over two weeks now. I've asked the front desk twice for a repair timelines and they don't have one. I assume they wait until enough equipment breaks to pay for repair. During this past summer, the sauna was down for nearly 3 months. Previously I had used the sauna 4x per week, and there was no discount for not having that amenity during that time. They are terrible at keeping gym members updated about hours on holidays. They won't post it on their social media for some reason. I've walked there when they were closed and ran into multiple members doing the same. It's not hard to post a story when you're closed, every other business in this city does that. Lastly this gym is filthy because they are cheap and won't outsource their cleaning. The sinks in the women's bathrooms are always grimy, and the water fountain has looked like this upstairs for two months. It's the most disgusting gym I have ever been a member at and it's definitely not the cheapest gym. If your New Year's resolution is to work out, go anywhere else.

My first day there. Place was spotless, staff was so nice and helpful. The locker room and sauna were beautiful! Honestly, just for those two amenities alone, makes the membership cost worth it! I enjoyed some weight machines and treadmill as well as looking in on a small group training class which I intend to join. I’m looking forward to my time at this gym! It’s also nice to leave with a caffeinated protein shake!

Pros: Good hours (open from 5AM weekdays), friendly staff, WiFi works, option to do classes Cons: Overcrowded in morning/evenings, could use more squat racks/bench presses/cable machines. If coming during these hours be ready to wait for equipment or adjust routine. Compounded by fact that multiple equipment is “under repair” for months with no updates/visible progress. They need to improve their maintenance workflow or be more transparent Seems like more emphasis is put into the premium services like the training classes than the actual gym user experience Overall: a convenient option for those living in Grad hospital who want flexible hours. But could be much improved especially considering the cost

City Fitness is a great gym. However, the Graduate Hospital location is not my favorite for a few reasons. First off, the positives; It has very friendly staff, very clean facilities, and a nice amount of amenities. They offer a full selection of classes and group/solo training, albeit smaller scale due to the lack of square footage of this location. I also really love the City Shakes protein shake bar. They have a wide selection of flavors and even protein coffee. This brings me to the negatives, the size, overcrowding, no full size towel service, and lack of weight room organization. Granted the smaller size I understand overcrowding is inevitable however during these times staff should be more present to ensure weights and equipment are being properly put away and stocked as people are moving items all over the weight room floor to find space to complete their workouts. My next major concern is again about weights/equipment not being in place. It seems regardless of crowdedness the weight room seems to be very unorganized and weights, mainly plates, are often not where they should be. The barbell benches are constantly in disarray with plates being in wrong slots or having only one of each size plate causing the user to have to constantly reshuffle plates and search the floor for the plates they need. The main concerns on this issue is Olympic squat rack plates and normal plates being mix matched, missing barbell clips (safety concern), and lack of properly stocked bench press plates (there seems to be less plates in general). Last issue with this location is the lack of full size towel service. Their excuse for this is that it is not a “full service” club. This seems unfair to the members because we pay the same monthly dues as a full service club and should at least receive this basic amenity. Overall a great place to workout in the neighborhood that just has a few key issues that need to be addressed to be a 5 star gym, even at its smaller stature.

Pros: 1. they have a good variety of free weights and machines, peloton bikes, squat racks, etc. 2. When I go at lunch, I largely can use what I want without waiting for it to become available 3. They have a sauna (when it’s not out of order) Cons 1. There have been many times where equipment is out of order. Sometimes weeks and sometimes months (the sauna was broken for literally 3 months in the summer of 2024). When things are out of order there is next to no communication on a repair timeline. If you ask the front desk staff, they will tell you they have no idea. Also membership fees are not reduced if a key amenity such as the sauna is not usable. 2. The place is not very clean. Whether it’s the bathrooms, the water fountain, etc. it feels like the cleaners are doing the bare minimum. They really need to outsource their cleaning. 3. Not good value for money. I pay like $70 a month. I don’t have access to any of the classes (that’s only for premium members), there is no pool, basketball court, the equipment is just basic equipment, and sometimes it feels like there’s just not a lot of attention to detail (for example the weights on the bench presses are always in random spots and all switched around). There have been a couple times where the bench press I am using does not have any 45lb plates on it, because they’ve been moved to the leg press machine and not returned. This is curious to me considering there’s always like 3-5 staff members hanging out behind the counter. Surely one of them can walk through once every couple hours and make sure things are in the right place. TLDR: City Fitness is not worth the price and there are better options (YMCA). I’d consider the ymca on Christian st. I recently switched and I’m enjoying it much more. They have enough equipment that allows me to do an identical workout that I do at city fitness. I get access to basketball courts, pickleball courts, a pool, a sauna, a variety of different classes every week - all for almost $10 less a month. The staff is also much more attentive. In the off chance a weight or two is out of place, a staff member moves it back as they do periodic walk throughs. The space feels much cleaner, and overall it’s just a better overall experience and I get way more amenities for less.

Highly recommend to anyone looking to start out in weight/resistance training. Being a long-distance runner I never really did much resistance training and always felt too inexperienced going to a standard gym. The trainers at Warhorse are amazing. They provide you workouts based on your goals, track your progress, and provide expert guidance in proper technique and form. The ability to schedule your sessions guarantees access to equipment and never dealing with an overcrowded space. They offer a friendly and welcoming experience to people of all skill levels.

I came to Warhorse Grad Hospital with a solid history of strength training, mostly with kettlebells and strongman implements at a Crossfit-style gym that did metcon workouts. When I train at Warhorse, I don't leave feeling absolutely wiped, which is how all the workouts I used to do had me. At Warhorse, the focus is steadily on strength, using a reasonable set/rep range that allows me to progress and recover. I don't dread coming to the gym because I don't walk out of there nearly a dead woman- yet at the same time I am absolutely challenged, encouraged, and pushed. I'm really grateful to have this sustainable approach to strength training at this point in my life. Ahmad is the man.

This is a great gym where they truly care for you. The coaches really push you when you need to be pushed but also make sure you’re safe. I’ve seen so much progress being part of this gym but more importantly I feel a part of their awesome community. Highly recommend

I have been training at Warhorse for a little over 6 months now. Finding this place is one of the best things I have done for myself in a very long time. I was intimidated at first. I had done personal training but by no means felt confident in lifting. I soon realized this place was a positive and welcoming environment and that intimidation went away. When I first reached out to the gym, Jaclyn promptly replied to my endless emails and answered all my questions. She helped identify what plan made sense for my lifestyle. I wanted a personal trainer. Something one on one. I was working through a bad hip impingement and wanted dedicated attention to help me work through that. And to be honest, I wanted a coach to teach me better form and force me to lift heavy things (and squat…and do lunges… and all the things I despise and avoid doing alone). After that point I started training one on one with Chris. I’ve had a few trainers in adulthood, but Chris stands out as the most impactful coach I have ever had. There are a few reasons for that. He meets me where I am at. In my past experience, I have gone through personal training programs where I really pushed myself and gone full out and then seriously burnt myself out. I would crash, anxiety would take over and I would inevitably fail. Chris taught me something valuable this year. It’s about consistency and it’s not that deep. As a woman there are some days and weeks where we don’t have as much energy as the one before. He listens to how I am feeling and adjusts the days plan accordingly. I leave feeling proud that I moved my body while honoring my body. Don't get me wrong we work hard AF. On the days and weeks where I have strength I am pushed to go full out and push it. But there are days where I have had the thought on my way to the gym that I just don’t have it in me. But I know I will be met by Chris who is flexible and reminds me its not that deep and that fear and anxiety of how I will perform or if I will be able to make it through my session just disappears. So i show up and I move my body. Because of this, I have never been this consistent, this STRONG or this dedicated to a process in my life. And I have seen incredible changes in my body and gains all while navigating an injury. This is the biggest win of all. I am so proud of myself and so grateful to Chris. Another reason why Chris is so impactful as a coach is that he is honest, transparent and leads with respect. This is important because it makes me respect him and his time. I don’t expect him to babysit my lived fitness journey. I feel like I do my job outside of the gym with sleep and nutrition – that is on me. But I do feel accountable to myself, the program and his time enough to get my butt out of bed in the morning. And when I show up, I feel ready to work and honor the time we set aside. Because he is a good dude and a great coach. (Though it is a shame he is a Jets fan - Go Birds). What also makes Warhorse a great space is that the other coaches are friendly and a joy to be around. So are the other members. It's such an inclusive environment. The other biggest plus is that the music is always on point. From Sound Garden to Kendrick Lamar, Taking Back Sunday to School Boy Q, or Sabrina Carpenter to Radiohead – it’s just great vibes. Also, Jaclyn’s tutorials on Instagram provide great insight on understanding certain movements and she gives great tips. I learn a lot from their content! Congrats to Jaclyn and Chris on creating such a great space. I feel lucky to train here.

Fitness Works is my second home. My favorite thing about it is that this is a no-nonsense place to train, everything is well maintained and people are respectful. Nothing is overly fancy or hyped up. For the size of the space they offer an impressive variety of stuff! There are selections of dumbbells on both main floors and some in the classroom, weight machines on both main floors, plenty of cardio equipment, a very nice pool, and there is even an area for boxing training. The classroom is large with pretty decent mirrors and you can use it for stretching etc. when there isn't a session going on. This probably wouldn't be a first pick for more advanced powerlifting or Olympic lifting since the space is a bit limited with just 3 squat racks and 2 deadlift platforms. Great place for general training and bodybuilding though. You can buy snacks and drinks at the front desk too. My only critique is that I wish they were open later and that there was a second chest fly machine.

At first I thought the billing issues were incompetence, but after actually dealing directly with the billing office (which seems like it was outsourced to the shadiest 3rd party they could find) its pretty clear this whole operation is a scam. The contract will be presented to you on a screen the size of a business card, but I implore you to read it carefully. You will have an easier time walking away from your mortgage.

I went back to Sweat after a 10 year hiatus, and really like laid back atmosphere and selection of classes. The gym also has a good selection of machines, free weights, and a large room where you can stretch and do other types exercises when classes aren't scheduled. Bad experience. Signed up for a free 21 days pass. I went back to say I would not continue with the enrollment at the end of the 21 days. Apparently only the manager can do it and I have to go back to make sure they won’t enroll me against my will. Process should be more transparent and easy for potential customers. Previews review confirm this type of behavior from management where they make it very difficult for you. If it is a free 21days what’s so complicated to say I will not enroll after that period?

Do not under any circumstances sign up with this gym. I have been attempting to negotiate a cancellation for months and have had my buyout fee balloon from 200 dollars to nearly 500 dollars, IN ADDITION to several hundred dollars of further penalties after a three month freeze where I was told payments would stop and monthly fees would only be 5 dollars. The gym has been completely incapable of helping me as the company is outsourced. Absolutely insane behavior and completely unethical approach to billing. Avoid!

The owner and staff were very helpful and welcoming when we visited on a Philly Bookstore walking tour. We discovered that Garland opened in 1972, and is one of the oldest New Age bookstores in the country. They also offer yoga classes, have lovely jewelry, statues, cards, and more. We had fun with the pick-your-own selection of gem stones display, and will be sharing them at a local youth nature center.

I been visiting this store since i waa a teenager. Always the staff are super nice, helpful, & friendly. Another store currently went out of business Mineralistic, when i visited them they treated you like a criminal even worse making a purchase i asked lady at register how much a product was i thought it was $5. It was an incense/smudging bundle. She turned around and looked at me like i was crazy. Extremly rude unprofessional in manner. I am not surprised they decided to close the store. Maybe they have health problems & I feel sympathetic to this fact. They expressed an angry demeanor to the public. Thank you Garland of Letters for you are the best store on South Street since forever! You were around when great stores like Zipperhead were still up & running. You are a South Street charm.

Darrick and his staff are kind and amazing people. I was unable to continue with my membership beyond my 21-day trial, but the time I was able to spend at the Queen Village location was always wonderful. Jim signed me up, walked me through all of the details that I needed to know, and remembered me every morning that I walked in and greeted me warmly. The cardio machines covered the basic needs I had for fitness, and the one and only yoga class I was able to attend was FANTASTIC. I was always found the locker room to be clean and comfortable. When it came time to cancel my membership, Tyler at the front desk was very kind and reasurring and did not even try to talk me into staying on like you might see on TV. When I noticed later on in the day that my membership was still active in the app, I panicked, especially when I could not get anyone on the phone. I did eventually get in touch with someone very kind at the South Philly location who not only told me they would contact Darrick but also gave me the email address for him if I needed to follow-up myself. After I sent my own email, Darrick called me personally and was just so kind and reassuring that everything had been taken care of and followed through with an email back to me as proof. If I am able to go back to a gym, it will definitely be SWEAT Fitness in Queen Village, because they really do care about the people that walk in and out of their facility.

I truly never write reviews but this place deserves one. They will continue charging you after you cancel your membership and give you the run around when you call them out on their shady practices. Two and a half months later I still have not been reimbursed for the overcharges. Do not go here, there’s plenty of other gyms in the area that cost the same and deserve your business more.

The "free" trial is a scam! Sadly, I have to repeat what others here have said: this gym is extremely unprofessional with its cancellation policy. I confirmed with an employee when & how I had to cancel my free trial, and followed the instructions exactly. 8 days later, not only have I not received a confirmation of my cancellation as requested, I was charged for my "membership". I reached out again to get my money back, and still have not heard anything. I will update this review in case this issue gets rectified, but until then, I strongly suggest you stay away from this place. Update: I reached out again after the comment below, but my emails continue to be ignored. They are quick to reply to reviews here, but entirely unresponsive to emails. Extremely unprofessional.

Beautiful gym. Clean, bright, all of the equipment functions. The sauna is a HUGE plus. The staff is great! The only thing preventing me from giving the East Passyunk location a 5 (wanted to give a 4.5) is the limited amount of certain stations (decline bench, flat bench stand out the most). Otherwise I’m very glad to be a member

Dishonest when signing up. No reason for that at all. Dishonest when attempting to cancel membership. Buyer beware. Read every single line of your contract. As the other 1-star reviews indicate, there is an extreme lack of explanation of anything when signing up. The sales team is clearly directed to be vague about pricing and charges. Save your peace of mind and go elsewhere for the same or less money.

Honestly the best Muay Thai gym I been to. I tried a few gyms prior to joining here over last three years and the coaches and members definitely are open-minded and with that truly welcoming to all levels and individuals at this gym. I been here for three months so far, and never a dull moment. I came in with some experience but even so when I asked for honestly about how to improve they didn't bs me and tried to rope me in with "private lesson" method. Joe and George and even the assistant coaches truly helped and still helping me up my game. I do want to compete someday and being apart of this gym, this team makes me feel like I will be ready once I take it to the next level in philly. I recommend this gym to any one beginner, intermediate, or advanced. You will learn what real Muay Thai is and what it mean up your skills.

Juniper Muay Thai is an awesome community with a remarkable coaching staff and friendly members. I came in with absolutely no Martial Arts experience and after my initial free intro class, I quickly grew fond of the awesome sport of Muay Thai. There is no pressure to sign up, and they make it clear you are free to cancel your membership at any time should you desire to. The class levels range from All Levels (beginner friendly), to Intermediate, to Advanced which is where the more experienced fighters train. They also offer kids classes as well as an all Womens class. Their class schedule that spans across most of the day and goes 7 days a week worked great for me as a 9-5 worker. George and Joe have built an awesome community at this gym, and are brilliant coaches, along with Coach Kartinya and Coach Mike. Whether you are brand new to Muay Thai or have fights under your belt, you can surely find your place to grow here at Juniper.

Home of the EOM Angels softball team. They were gracious hosts, but there are a few things to be aware of before you play on this field. The infield has an extremely hard surface. The transition from the infield to the outfield involves a fairly sharp drop-off, particularly at the corners of the infield. Also, the home team supplies the balls when you play a league game, and on the night we were there, they were of the safety ball variety. Some of our girls hit what would have been rockets with a standard ASA softball, but the ball barely made it to the outfield. We had an enjoyable night in South Philly when we played there, aided by the proximity to Pat's Steaks for our after-game meal. There may be fields with fancier concessions stands and more convenient parking, but we haven't enjoyed ourselves any more than we did on the night we played the Angels.

I’ve been a member of SH since the start and always loved the classes and instructors. They really hit it out of the park, though, during my pregnancy: each instructor was mindful of my needs and comfort, and offered alternatives to the routine that were best for my body at that time. I am grateful to have this in the neighborhood and am looking forward to getting back in classes soon!

Dropped in here with a friend yesterday, and man, what a great vibe. The owner was extremely kind and welcoming and the members were friendly. It was overall such a great atmosphere that immediately made me feel comfortable. The conditioning class was a great workout and felt like it went by so fast! I’d definitely come back here the next time I’m in the area.

I became a Strength Haüs member after over 6 months at another kettlebell gym and I’m so glad I switched! I left my plateau and gained muscle here much faster. I also corrected a form issue that was causing my lower back to hurt. I came in thinking that 12K was my heavy bell, but after just a few months I use 14K, with 16k as my heavy. I feel so strong! My friends are all commenting that my butt is looking especially good. The coaches are fun and welcoming. Everyone is great at demonstrating without being intimidating. They challenge me but also encourage everyone not to have an ego so we don't get hurt. There's a big variety of strength levels in the classes with modifications offered to make things harder or easier. The community is welcoming and the playlists are on point. Lastly their online booking system is easy.

Jon, Molly and their crew have made an amazing, welcoming space in the heart of South Philly. Their classes are fun and challenging. I've been a member for about 3 months, and the benefits are great. I take advantage of extracurricular gym use and I get to use all the equipment at my own pace. They use the "Somble" app for scheduling. It is a bit clunky, but functional, and allows easy booking (and unhooking for when my plans change). Their cancellation policies are very reasonable, and they also don't have draconian membership contracts. Very happy to live nearby this excellent community space with friendly, driven, compassionate people!

Can’t say enough wonderful things about Strength Haüs! I’ve been working with Jess for several months and am so thrilled to have found an incredible coach in a very cool, dynamic and welcoming space. Jess is a master at all she does, is great at explaining and demonstrating things, is insanely knowledgeable, and puts me at ease— an all around gem of a human and trainer. She’s supportive and encouraging, and always available to answer questions. I am amazed with how much progress Jess has helped me make with my balance, mobility, and strength (after being derailed by an injury a bit ago). Jess, Jon & the team are so fun and down to earth— I truly look forward to my visits to SH. I highly recommend checking out SH for 1-on-1 coaching with Jess or for classes— it doesn’t get any better!

I love Uprising! It is a place where I can just close my eyes and follow the instructions( excellent instructions) and detached from my daily responsibilities. It is a place where everyone does YOGA(no looking at others, no pushing hard on yourself, no competitions). There is no mirrors. The studio is clean, uses dim light and quiet music. . . There is a vibe that is very welcoming. I am so glad that I got class cards as Christmas gift, I will be a regular student here even my cards end :-)

I’ve been practicing at this studio for over a year now & so happy I ended up here! Very clean studio and an awesome community! They have everything you’ll need there so you can just show up. Every instructor I’ve had is so kind, welcoming and knowledgeable. There are a plethora of classes at all hours of the day & various different forms of yoga so there’s something for everyone. They have several 7am weekday classes to start the day right, several great vinyasa classes, & yin/restorative is always a great treat for the body and mind. Achola, the Owner, is a rockstar! The place is in great hands. Not only are her classes high quality but it feels like she’s always looking to improve the studio’s offerings and focuses on what the community is looking for. They always have great specials and deals for new members and existing. Couldn’t recommend this studio more!!!
