I had such a horrible and uncomfortable experience with the front desk receptionist. He must not have been trained on creating a good customer experience. I have been to Equinox’s all over the country and couldn’t believe the treatment that I had. So unfortunate because I went to the Union St location the day before and had such a lovely encounter with their manager. I would never go to this location again.

They are very quick to send spam emails for referrals every two weeks yet when a referral signs up, they will make up rules that aren’t disclosed anywhere to not give the bonus. They will do anything to keep signing up people for their already crowded and small gym, but upholding their end of the agreement seems like a feat not worth respecting. Deceitful and incompetent customer service is what they do best.

Took a yoga class w Mary here and she was very warm and welcoming. It was challenging and a great workout. This location is sprawling. The art deco furniture is super fun. Tons of equipment. Personalized pumpkins. The details in the decor makes this location great for working!

Ok gym. Too crowded but good classes. Water pressure too low, tho I didn’t experience the no hot water issue others mentioned. I was told I’ll be able to freeze my account 60 days each year before I joined, but it’s actually just once per year for either 1 or 2 months at a time. Well that doesn’t work out too well for its clientele who probably travel often, does it? Hate chains like these trying to trick their members. Yet another reminder this is just a big corp trying to extract as much $ as possible. I did have a great 1:1 personal training experience tho. It was the first trainer I liked ever in the US. She listened to my concerns, paid full attention to my forms the entire time, and gave me the exact feedback I had been looking for. Unlike my previous trainers, she never looked at her phone once or tell me my forms were just “fine” when I complain about back pain. My pilates lesson was just average, so the quality of personal sessions vary a lot by the trainers/instructors.

I’ve been a member of Equinox for pretty long time, and I’m extremely frustrated with the recent experience I’ve had with their billing and customer service. I requested to freeze my membership for one month, as per the terms of my agreement, but was still charged the full price for that month. Despite reaching out to the gym’s management multiple times to request a refund, they have refused to correct the issue or issue a refund, even though it was clearly their error. I’ve always been happy with the gym's facilities and services, but this lack of responsiveness and failure to honor the freeze terms has been incredibly disappointing. I expect better from a company of this caliber, and I would caution anyone considering a membership to be aware of how they handle billing discrepancies. I’m considering taking further action to resolve this, but it’s been a frustrating and time-consuming process.

The gym is big and has a good variety of equipments, despite that I’m unsure if it’s worth the 300+ membership. The pool is always crowded and many swimmers don't wear caps. The front desk lady was pretty rude and unhelpful, the worst I dealt with compared to all other sf locations

This gym is enormous! They have all the latest equipment and keep this location incredibly clean. I love they have weights in 2.5lb increments (22.5lb and 27.5lb dumbbells)! It’s very spacious and the equipment is placed strategic for many types of workouts.

I came into this club with high expectations but unfortunately had a disappointing experience with the front desk staff. I arrived on a Tuesday evening at 7 PM and explained that I wanted to tour the location because I was considering switching my active membership from the Berkeley club ($226/month) to this club ($305/month with a corporate discount). However, the staff member informed me that, due to the club’s different tier, I couldn’t do a walkthrough on my own and would need to meet with a membership advisor. When I asked if a manager was available to assist, I was told there was none. I then asked if he could simply switch my membership on the spot so I could use the gym immediately. His response? “I can’t do that; you need to meet with a membership advisor.” This made no sense—why would switching an active membership require a manager or advisor? All that’s needed is to adjust which club bills me and the associated cost. To make matters worse, he suggested I pay $45 for a day pass to use the gym. Paying for a day pass at a gym where I’m already a paying member, shelling out $226/month, is absurd. After I made it clear I wasn’t interested in the day pass, he asked again if I wanted him to charge my card on file for it. What’s especially frustrating is how much worse the customer service was here compared to the Berkeley club. At Berkeley, I’ve had managers directly reach out to help resolve issues and ensure my experience as a member was positive. The contrast couldn’t be starker: while Berkeley provides proactive and thoughtful service, this club left me feeling like my loyalty as a paying member wasn’t valued at all. Other locations, such as Beale Street and Pine Street, also provide far superior service: Beale Street Club: Their staff were much friendlier and accommodating. When they couldn’t switch my membership on the spot, they apologized sincerely and took the initiative to connect me with their membership team. Pine Street Club: Also a great experience, with helpful and welcoming staff. For a club that charges significantly more, I expected much better. If you’re considering a membership here, I’d strongly recommend looking at other locations that value and respect their members.

The gym is fairly well equipped. It feels like a converted office. I think people join for the classes. Not many power racks and they don't get used very much. Equipment is always open. Nice executive lockers if you want your gym clothes laundered. It's a minor benefit and I always found the towels smell like old coffee. Also they shrunk my shorts and all the labels peeled off my shirts. My advice: keep it simple with fitness sf, instead.

Just started here a month ago, and I'm already having problems. One staff member came up to me and told me to not stay past the closing time. It was a holiday and I didn't know the holiday hours. I didn't check the app or the door, as I just wanted to work out and shower. I didn't get to shower. The woman was rude and continued to argue with me. I told her that she didn't inform me of the holiday hours; she had walked off when I checked in, so she didn't check my face on the computer monitor. Not very professional. Already, I see your rude staff and I will not pay if this continues. I will document every occurrence and if it continues, I will file a lawsuit. Respect your patrons!

Enjoyed my time working out here. While there are too many cardio machines compared to weight lifting machines. The locker room and showers were clean. The atmosphere is respectful and considerate. Appreciate Connie for making my check in times at the gym an efficient process.

Staff is very abrasive. Avoid if possible. I went for a tour, the staff led me around talking a lot about pricing, then at the end said I could try out the space. A few minutes later, the manager walked up to me, said I wasn’t allowed to try the equipment without signing up. I told him his colleague said it was fine, he said he just asked her and I was lying, and said I needed to sign up or leave before escorting me out. First time I’ve ever been kicked out of a gym.

The ceilings are so low, the heat from everyone working out and sweating creates an odor. They don’t have enough fans. The layout of the machines is really awkward. As I tried to get into my workout zone and decided to give them a chance, I start using the stair master and suddenly realize that there’s a security camera pointed right in my face. The ceiling are SO LOW the camera is right by the machines recording you. That did it. Worst experience at a PF because of the facilities. The employees are nice and helpful.

After 2 years of being a member of Planet Fitness, and never missing a payment, I get denied access all of a sudden due to some vague payment confusion between this franchise and my third-party provider. Both of these parties refuse to talk to each other, instead demanding a call from the other side, and im here stuck in the middle with no hope of resolution. This franchise won’t let me in even tho I have proof that I am up to date, while we sort this issue out. On top of this they refuse to let me speak to the manager Tarjay, and put a note on my file that I was angry and aggressive just because I’m slightly frustrated about the situation. They never gave me any advance notice about this issue, so now I’ve wasted time travelling downtown on two occasions just to be turned away even though my payments are completely up to date. I’ve found this to be an extremely unprofessional and frustrating experience.

Dogpatch Boulders is hands down one of the best climbing gyms in the Bay Area! The facility is massive, with walls for all levels—from beginner to advanced. The route setting is creative and challenging, keeping things fresh and exciting every time I visit. The staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to help with tips or advice. The community vibe here is amazing—welcoming and encouraging, no matter your skill level. One of the highlights? They have a sauna in each of the locker rooms! It’s the perfect way to unwind after a tough session on the walls. Combine that with their clean and well-maintained gym, spacious training areas, and even a yoga studio, and this place really has it all. Highly recommend for climbers of all levels!

one of the best gyms in the bay by far. all new holds, gym equipment, and sauna. plenty of space to study and stretch when you're not climbing. FANTASTIC service. employees are kind, helpful, and fun to talk to. can get busy weekday evenings but there's plenty of well-set routes to try including a comp wall.

Really nice facility for bouldering -- huge space filled with commercial boulders, as well as Kilter board and spray walls which are certainly nice to have. Pretty good selection of training equipment (campus rungs, a few hangboards, adequate weights section for climbers, no pegboard). However, it's a bit too pricey and crowded for me. Maybe I'm just a bit grouchy remembering the crowds and prices of Bay Area gyms 10 years ago, but it's hard for me to justify the cost, especially considering there's a number of things that I don't particularly want to subsidize through my membership (classes, yoga, events, coworking space) and the number of people I have to fight through to get to the things I do want to use.

I had a really great experience bouldering here as a novice. The routes helped me practice a lot of skills and techniques which are either new or unfamiliar to me. It’s climbing so obviously there’s going to be an emphasis on the vertical aspects of movement, but it’s nice to be challenged also horizontally in that setting. I feel like a lot of routes for beginners put too much emphasis on going up and down while a lot of the V0-V1 in this gym exposed you to different elements of bouldering.

Pretty great setting, but a steep incline of difficulty from v6 to v7, really greasy holds, terrible brushes, and not the best ventilation. I went in for a few hours and could not only flash v6 consistently, but also do them as 4x4s and couldn't get a single 7. I don't think anyone brushes the holds and there's a ton of traffic before they are reset so the holds are VERY greasy. Part of the reason no one brushes the holds is because they only have 2 brushes, both of which are just poles with brushes poorly taped to their ends. The general facilities, weight area, hangboards, spray walls, bathrooms, and other aspects of the gym are actually quite nice, though!

Top notch climbing gym in SF. Great for lead and belay Bouldering section is a bit cramped when crowded. The weights section is pretty good. Good lockers and sauna

Been going here for years. Honestly, I only go anymore because it's very close to where I live. The gym is pretty worn and crappy. It's also SUPER crowded after work on weekdays, to the point it's impossible to climb with any efficiency. Workout machines are old and crappy and frequently broken and they have a very limited selection. Sauna is nice, but very small. The classes are kind of a joke, there are literally zero hiit classes that are not during 9-5 working hours, so if you have a normal work schedule you will never be able to attend. I did go to one once and it was also very strange, just an instructor writing the exercises on a board and then you do them at your own pace. Zero energy, zero good music to pump you up, literally just like working out on your own? Get better instructors and get more classes at times people who have jobs can attend. Getting harder and harder to justify the ever increasing cost of membership. Movement is much nicer and has better classes, more interesting routes, cleaner, and less crowded.

It's been over a decade since I last climbed, and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to return to the sport while visiting town to see my son. I remembered the climbing community being incredibly supportive, and I was reminded of their warmth and kindness as soon as I walked into Mission Cliffs. A special shout-out to Laurie at the front desk. He couldn't have been more welcoming and enthusiastic about having me back and climbing with my son. His positive energy and genuine friendliness set the tone for an amazing experience. Mission Cliffs is a great example of how exceptional customer service can make a big difference. Their welcoming attitude and friendly staff created a memorable experience. Thank you for providing a fantastic climbing experience and helping me create a lasting memory with my son.

I rarely write negative reviews — especially for a climbing gym — but my experience at Mission Cliffs in SF was so disappointing in so many ways. Maria (staff member) was extremely condescending. We were visiting from out of town and my partner needed to take his lead certification because he hadn’t visited a touchstone before. Between us, we have hundreds of hours of lead climbing experiences, both indoors and outside. We were made to wait over an hour — despite repeatedly coming back to the front desk to ask when we could take it and if anyone was available (they were, but were just chit chatting at the desk). After the hour, we finally went to the desk to ask again and she said “oh, hasn’t someone already tested you yet?” to which she finally agreed to come administer the test. I have previously passed a lead test at touchstone, but was told that by participating in the test again that if I did anything wrong my lead cert would be revoked. Get the need to be safe here, but this felt super unnecessary. She then pointed out that I didn’t have a lead card (we had told her when checking in that we were visiting from out of town and didn’t have this). She then said in an accusatory tone that she could take away my lead cert for not having the card (all before the test, all still extremely unnecessary). She then proceeded to administer the test — which is one of the unnecessarily hardest lead routes for a test imo having visited many gyms in many countries. There is no need for a lead climber to be able to climb an overhung 10b successfully and clean in one go — the emphasis should clearly be on safety rather than ability (other gyms I have visited have plenty of great 10.b and below lead routes). There is also no need to intimidate the climber taking the test prior to them taking the test. Her instructions were convoluted (“clip 6 clips, you can discuss which ones between you” — unclear why she couldn’t just say clip all the draws on the route) and she was just downright mean. The cumulative effect of this is a gym that feels extremely oppressive and unfriendly to climbers — both old and new. I cannot even imagine how a newer lead climber would feel taking this test — intimidated, scared, and frankly not wanting to bother to clear these hurdles. Sadly, to top it off, the route setting was not even good. Straight up and down and nothing very interesting.

The gym was clean and has great facilities. I thought the grades were a little funky and all over the place. The bouldering grades were quite hard and the lead/top-rope grades were very soft. Either way, I had a good climbing experience. I was appreciative of the staff’s safety standards but I felt ripped off on my lead test. We arrived around ~10am and had to wait till 4:30 to take our test, we were failed over minor backstepping and specific rules of the test that weren’t communicated. Our examiner was very condescending, cold, rude, and borderline confrontational from the start. For example, when my friend took the top-rope exam, he was asked how long the tail needed to be. He responded “about a fist and a finger or so”. The examiner glared and snarled “it has to be at least 6 inches!”. It was all ironic because most of the permanent top-rope ropes didn’t have stopper knots. I really wanted to like the gym, and my buddy and I had a great time on the wall but the treatment of a certain staff member really stained my experience.

Fantastic little gym with a huge variety of equipment that made me excited like a kid. It’s got your standard bodybuilding stuff as well an entire functional area that’s decent for CrossFit etc. I would love to see rings there. Lots of new equipment too and everything is tidy and well maintained👌 Was nice to see hip thrust machine that’s rare to come across. ClassPass drop in is very affordable at ~$15 The one downside is that the ceiling is low enough that you can't do muscle-ups.

I loved using Alex Fitness while I was in SF for my week visit - they are extremely well-equipped despite being a small-sized gym. They were kind enough to let me use the gym even when I accidentally went the day after my pass expired. Thank you!

I met with Dmitry for personal training, and he was great—very knowledgeable and helpful! The gym itself has a great selection of equipment. I came during the day and is rarely crowded, making it easy to get in a good workout without waiting. The gym is going through renovation and have added new equipments which is exciting. Plus, the location is convenient with easy access. Highly recommend!

Just tried this place and decided to quit early because there are too many creepy people everywhere that you go. In the locker room, there is a "Chatty Cathy" Filipino man, a master of small talk, that won't leave you alone. In the same area, there is an old black man that lays on a bench while doing a stretching routine without cloths. After the place opens, it quickly turns into a massive daycare with toddlers running all around. The locker rooms, as well as the weight room, fill up with under aged youths. Other than that, the place is generally very clean with numerous amenities such as clean towels, sani wipes, drinking water, liquid soaps, etc. The steam room does quite well as you begin to perspire immediately upon entering. Go early to avoid the the onslaught of the little people and beware of the creeps!

JCC is a great gym. It’s super clean and the facilities are maintained well. The staff is friendly and helpful as well as the instructors. HOWEVER, I do not appreciate the thousands of unfriendly wipes that we must use to clean equipment as they contribute to unneeded and destructive trash to our environment. Do better JCC!!

Large, clean and friendly - probably the best gym in SF. Came here a couple of times on guest passes. They are expensive ($45) and require a prior tour of the facility but the value for money is still OK with gym, pool, sauna, towels, water etc. included. Staff is particularly nice. The crowd working out here is a good mix of all ages and fitness levels. Highly recommended.

The JCCSF is my refuge. I love the gym, classes, pool, and amenities in the locker room. It is clean and light with lots of windows and good ventilation. The staff is customer friendly. The cultural events are diverse. There are activities for all ages with respect for those with disabilities. 🙏

Route setting: 5/5 - great routes. Gear: 2/5 - extremely run down gear, mist bring your own. Owner really needs to resupply rentals… but they do have the bare necessities. Location: 8/5 - just ridiculously cool views. Despite the shortcomings here, it’s worth a visit. (The scooter area is off limits here, but there is a bus line) Staff: 5/5 - chill, good vibes. Notes: The other comments here about walls being bare or shut down are true. For such a beautiful gym, it’s a shame things go unattended here and walls are taped off. There is enough to go around but it’s far from perfect here.

I pay an absurd amount of money for you to close the bouldering area for multiple consecutive days. For people that o ly get to come in once or twice a week. This sucks. I'm going to switch to touchstone. Update: it's 10 days after they first shut down bouldering walls, and they still don't have them all opened back up. Canceled membership. Update 2: one week post competition. There are still 2 walls that remain unset. Can't believe people pay $110 a month for blank walls.

tldr; convenient location, routes aren't as fun as other gyms I'm a newbie to bouldering, but have visited quite a few gyms around the Bay. The location is convenient, and the routes are challenging. However, I find routes at other gyms to be more fun, while still being challenging. The routes here seem to punish people with longer limbs, when compared to other gyms.

With views looking out to the Golden Gate Bridge, the beach, AND the city skyline, how could you not love this gym?! The Presidio warehouse aesthetic gives it a truly unique vibe. Great route setting, clean workout areas, and a cozy little co-working spot on the second floor. Sergey has some great closing announcements 👌🏼 Hands down my favorite climbing gym!

Absolutely epic gym. Great views from the big windows out into the bay. See Alcatraz as you climb. Very creative and fun routes with challenging features. Really cool bouldering with fun finishes. Staff is super friendly and helpful. They pick up the phone too. Can’t wait to go back.

Do not come to this gym if you are trying to use the advertised 3 day pass to try the gym. I wanted to check out the gym before committing to a 2 month membership, but the worker named Marion or Marlon did not give me the option. It practically seemed that I had no other choice than signing up, so I left. It looks like in other reviews it has happened to other people, so I should have read them in advance. I don’t know why they offer this option if they are not going to let people use it.

The management is actually nice and try to help you with the best they can. The best part is they got all the machines that one usually needs. If anything is broken, they fix it within few weeks. There’s ALWAYS at least one cleaning staff working there. So yes the gym is clean! And it’s basically chain of LA fitness so you get access to all city sports in the bay area, which i really used a lot and LA fitness across the country.

OMG I am so appalled and let down by the management at this facility. They failed to inform anyone that the pool would be closed from the 13th to the 17th for maintenance. I only found out that the pool was closed When I arrived there to use it. I was also stunned and very disgusted by what I saw in the pool. They have set up dirty contractors scaffolding in the pool, it's actually sitting in the water. I hope to God that they drain and sanitize the pool after they're done with the work on the ceiling. Furthermore I called and asked to speak to a manager and when I explained that the only reason I go-to the gym was to use the pool he pretty much told me that there was nothing he could do. He did not try to make me feel whole or treat me like a paying member he just fobbed me off by saying that there was nothing he could do. I have attached a picture of the contractors scaffold that's currently in the water.

To be honest I don’t even know where to start with this review, there’s so many things wrong with this gym. I used to be a member years ago and canceled my membership because it was too crowded, but I decided to try it out again and come as a guest since my friends are members at this gym. For starters, the gym is insanely crowded at all times. It’s also not maintained at all and a lot of the machines are out of order periodically. The machines are also all ancient and all ripped up, some of them have stickers on them because you can no longer see the numbers on the weights… The staff are also incredibly unfriendly and all have attitudes, especially when you have any questions other than “where do I sign up?”… To top everything off, I have been getting harassed with calls and non stop voicemails over the last month asking when I want to come in and sign up. I asked them to stop calling me twice and have received 6 calls since asking the second time… I get you guys are trying to get more members (probably not a good idea since the gym is already insanely crowded as it is) but harassing potential customers with calls is making me want to sign up for this gym even less 🤦🏼‍♀️ Save your troubles and sign up for Crunch Fitness instead! Their gyms are so much cleaner, the machines are all working/in good condition, and all the staff are very nice.

This gym is my go to. I recently signed up after talking with Anant, one of the general managers at the gym. He was one of the most courteous people Ive had the pleasure to work with in this space. Most gyms, because i still need work, make me feel anxious and super uncomfortable. Anant reassured that this place would be different, and it absolutely is. Ive been now coming for about a month, and i'm happier here than I have been at any other facilities. and im getting healthier! Thank you you for making this space a place I want to be, rather than a place i feel forced to go!
