Quite a good YMCA compared to what we have in Somerville. Decent facilities and classes. I have used their gym, classes, swimming pool, locker rooms and free weights section on multiple occasions over the last 1 year or so... My daughter goes to their swim classes and has learnt more in 1 year than she learnt at the other schools in 2-3 years of going there...because the class sizes are small and the teachers are great at what they do! They love teaching and it shows. My daughter looks forward to her swim class each week, and a nice sense of camaraderie gets created in each group, they have adult classes but i havent joined. they have a sauna by the pool which is nice... The toilets are in the locker room with the showers so you have to go up one floor... The classes are also fun. I have tried Rezist, zumba, cycling and yoga. Good teachers, some of the better ones get booked out faster... easy and fast check in, easy to find parking, sometimes free by the YMCA inner roads or for 1/2$ on the main roads... never had issues with parking... if you drive around a few times, someone or the other is leaving and you get a spot

The Charlestown YMCA is a great facility with great staff and group exercise instructors. The exercise equipment was just recently replaced and it's generally never too crowded to use a machine. I have recently started going to the group Spin classes and they are fantastic!

The child swim classes are fun and at your own pace. All the activities were easy to follow for different ages. The classes were a fun way to introduce my daughter to water without being scared and learn valuable water basics.

I love this YMCA I grew up going to this YMCA when I lived in the Basilica in the Charlestown Navy Yard. I believe you are a owner or renter of a condo within the Charlestown Navy Yard you have the privilege of having a free membership. This is a very classy YMCA and open to the community. It is also located in a very nice area as well

I came to this gym when it first open good staff good equipment good place to work out now the gym seems to be run down several machines have been down for a while the hand dryers in men’s room both are broken and tge staff seems to have a big turn around on employees and the customer service has gone down

Decent variety of machines for cardio and weight training. It does not seem like the best supported PF in the chain because some machines that have been broken for some time have stayed broken or some public cleaning supplies aren't replaced regularly, but the staff will step in where they can. It gets the job done for $10/month. I also LOVE the Caribbean vibe in there. From languages to music to body type. I feel comfortable moving around with a bit more curve to me. I have not used the “VIP” area to review.

Amazing gym but i cancelled my membership as I never really came for a workout here. All the machines that I tried were working and in a clean condition. Parking could be a huge challenge as there is very little space in front of the gym

Awesome gym. They have everything and each room is broken up by body part which is helpful (ex: sections for legs, arms, squatting, benching, stretching). Good amount of cardio equipment. Older and newer weightlifting equipment and machines. Really enjoyed my workout here - good vibes and friendly members. The women’s locker room has showers with soap and a nice sauna. Plenty of lockers to store your things. I went for a day pass as I was visiting a friend who lives nearby - price was $15. I thought it was worth it for a good workout

Very disappointing, came to the gym to take a tour and workout, was told no and must purchase a $15 day pass. In 20 years of checking out new gyms when moving to a new neighborhood, I have never been told you had to pay to try out a new gym for one time. Easy decision to never come back. I had heard it was friendlier in this part of Boston. Clearly not the case.

This place is alright. A no frills neighborhood gym that gets the job done. The owner is nice, the folks you email with are helpful and solves issues. 1. But — forget about the front desk folks — specifically the young man who sits there after 6pm — knows nothing, in a hurry to say off tangent things all over the place instead of listening to what you’re actually asking about, and defensively says things like, “I don’t care what the email says…” while you’re not even done with what you’re asking about and then contradicts himself saying “we are easy to talk to”?!? And the older man who just sits there and watches his shows. 2. They promote their phone app — but it sucks and doesn’t really serve much purpose. e.g. I already have memberships—but when I click on my app under my memberships, it shows nothing about my own membership; it shows the memberships that they’re currently selling. 3. When I first came to the gym, I told them it’s my first time and I asked where I’m supposed to go. The front desk elderly man just pointed to one side of the gym and went back to watch his show on his phone. Basically they take ‘no one will bother you’ to the next level. No one who works there actually bothers to know about the memberships they sell or anything at all! No one knows anything but the owner and whoever answers the email. Lol. I still go because this is the nearest gym facility near me. I suppose the area is ripe for competition or I hope this place gets bought out under new management or something.

Nice local gym. A little shabby, but there is everything you need for training, and it's pretty big as well. The best thing - they do not have contract, enrollment fees, commitment fees, annual fees and any other hidden fees. The price you see is the price you pay. And if you wanna make a brake, you're just stop paying, and that's it. Pretty honest policy, in my opinion, which is a rare good nowadays.

There's a 15 dollar day pass if you're not sure you want to commit or not. However, they usually have promos if you're willing to commit several months of training/going to the gym.

Just want to warn the community about a man who is a regular here: slender older white man with toothy grin and medium length white hair plus white mustache and beard. He groped me in the pool and tried to play it off like it was an accident during recreational swim. Front desk was informed and did nothing about it. If you are a woman, please bring a buddy for protection. If you have children, please accompany them and watch out for this man. He seems very fond of the kids as well. I’ve been informed he also enjoys exposing himself to young boys in the men’s locker room. This may be the same guy who also frequently walks around JP pond & enjoys yelling at women there too.

I love Curtis Hall and feel fortunate to have access to this resource- the only reason I rated it 4 instead of 5 is because the facilities (especially women’s locker room) really need to be updated. The staff is excellent - shout out to the manager, the wonderful front desk staff (especially Lenroy and Evelyn) and Vlad (the best lifeguard ever). I’ve been swimming here for 8 years, and you can’t beat the value. Truly a community feeling at this center.

Like offers which are great only reason a 3 and not 5 because they have 1 day a week it's early as hell. I'm sleeping 😴 at 7am. They should have 1 night a week adult swimming lessons or on a Saturday from 12 noon. But the fact it offers different things for community is great. Definitely will go and the receptionist Lenroy was very pleasant 😊 individual.

5⭐️✨! Not only is the gym conveniently located, the staff including Coach Pierre, Brandon, Dwight, Patrick, Natalie, Gabriel, Jeremiah, Nelson and Arlette are truly amazing and really want to see everyone meet their fitness goals 🙂. They are very welcoming and willing to answer any questions you have and the individual coaching and group classes are both a challenging and rewarding experience. Most of the gym goers are also friendly and willing to help you if needed. The equipment is in good condition and the gym has come a long way from when I originally became a member years ago. For the price, it is absolutely worth it and a good investment.

After 7 years of going to this gym I was recently charged $69.99 for a yearly fee on top of my monthly $26.99 fee. GREED at it's finest. I cancelled my membership and the girl at the desk tells me rudely they are not refunding me my $69.99 yearly fee so I had to put a dispute in with my credit card over this greed. They just increase the costs and they expect you to pay. Never joining this gym ever again.

I been going here since it was opened. It’s solid for a cheap option. Friendly staff and a good price. I enjoy the gym. One thing I noticed tho is for the first ten years they always played Latin and hip hop and now they don’t haha. Gentrification has swooped in Roslindale and it seems they are playing all bad rock music eventho 95% of the clients are still black and latin and don’t like this music . Doesnt make sense.

Gym is fine. Staff is pleasant. Management is MIA. Have been chasing them for three weeks regarding a billing issue and can’t be bothered to return my calls. Note - if you have two forms of payment on the app, it may not be enough to prevent shady late payment charges or them running your card for $100 in a single month all without notice. *follow-up - two months since I posted and despite the comment below still no response from the owner. Had to cancel my membership and dispute charges with my cc instead of working out what was probably system glitch. Unfortunate but be warned if you consider this giving this location your business. On a positive note, every member of the staff was very emphatic and responsive… just not the owner 🤦

In the beginning, it was a little challenging being African-American and going into the gym. I expect a racially competent environment however, now as I’ve been going here for almost a year, they have become much more friendly to me. The staff the people that come in and I think that’s very important. Life is already full of hardships. The last thing we need is people at the gym, making it even more harder. however, I like the front desk team that they have now and I feel it’s becoming more better shoutout to the pool manager !!

The available workout equipment is intentionally minimal, designed to emphasize core, functional movements that anyone can master. Interestingly, the adults participating often don’t adhere to conventional gym attire, opting for comfortable casual clothing instead. This approach can seem unorthodox,

I have been a member at the YMCA in Hyde Park for about 2 years now and enjoy using the facility. I workout in the morning or at lunch for a quick hour and never feel like it’s overcrowded or I cant use a machine or weights. I love that i can get in an out. The facility is clean and i really like that they have a good offering of swimming classes for kids. I wish they had more toddler/kid programs like soccer or gymnastics. For kid classes i usually have to check out another location. The perk is once your a member you can use the other facilities and sign for classes for yourself and your kids.

I have been coming since November. I come before work. I arrive about 2am. The staff is great. I have seen a few others using equipment that allowed me to learn how to use them. I end each visit with either HydroMassage or the standard massage chair. I haven't been in the locker room or downstairs free weights. Someday, I will venture around. I find it a relaxing, no pressure experience.

It’s a pretty solid gym and reasonably priced but they do not have A/C and it is dangerously hot for a gym. I’ve seen the thermometer in here read 85-90 degrees and they say “oh it’s cooler outside than the A/C would be” like no it’s absolutely not. Some days I have to cut my workout short because I’m dropping in sweat

The Lab is my favorite place for group classes and personal training. Kim has created a workout community that is authentic, inclusive, nurturing, and fun. She is also just an enjoyable human to spend an hour with. The workouts are varied and challenging while being accessible for all ages, sizes, and abilities. In personal training, Kim has created a program that works for both me and my wife, even though we have wildly different fitness preferences and goals. Kim seeks out feedback to make sure that the lab programming, scheduling, and equipment continue to meet the needs of the community. All instructors are qualified and committed to the inclusive mission–Amy’s Rise and Grind is a great way to start the workday.

Movement, fitness, health, community and care are things that enrich my life. Being a mindful movement teacher, I look for others in the world that I respect and can learn from - that create spaces that I want to learn in. Kim has definitely created that! I love what she has built - a small gym, with group classes (and private training) that are fun, diverse, thoughtful and inclusive. Kim makes workouts challenging, but is never pushy and always has the best attitude. Thanks for being such a superstar Kim.

I first met Kim when she was my son's boxing coach. I was so excited when she opened the Human Movement Lab in Hyde Park. Kim is excellent—knowledgeable, attentive, fun, and truly invested in helping you reach your goals. The gym itself is spacious and well-equipped, creating a great atmosphere for workouts. The classes are not only fun but also challenging, and they cater to a range of fitness levels. What I really appreciate is how personalized the sessions are—everything is tailored to meet your specific needs and fitness goals. Whether you're a beginner or experienced, you'll feel supported and motivated here. I’ve had a fantastic experience at the Human Movement Lab! Highly recommend!

I've been coming here for about a year and a half. I have had Mobility issues in the past and she is great at giving alternative movements to do if necessary. I leave this review after shoveling the driveway and the sidewalk. Normally my back and legs would be writhing in pain and I can say that the last few times I have shoveled have been much easier than they had been in years past and I know it wouldn't be possible without going to Kim's classes.

I started taking classes at HML last fall and I can't recommend it enough! Kim creates such a welcoming and inclusive environment. As someone in a larger body, I've often felt out of place in fitness spaces, but here I feel empowered and motivated. Kim’s support and encouragement makes all the difference. If you're looking for a gym where you can truly be yourself and thrive, sign up for a class!!

Love this Equinox location! Manager is doing a fantastic service to members by keeping the club ventilated, clean, and I’m super grateful there are no TV’s at this location! Seaport retains the true Equinox brand experience. I’ve been a member in LA and NYC. Seaport is the nicest spa-gym vibes. My only suggestion is if they could offer more running, tabata, sculpt classes at 8am, 8:30am, and 9-10am M-Th. There are a lot of yoga and Pilates and all morning classes are at 6:30 & 7:15, but nothing after that until noon or evening. Need options for 8-9am. Overall, love the oasis of this location and the fact that there are no tv’s is why I’m joining.

Ok, it’s not flawless by any stretch of the imagination, but if ratings are comparative assessments of quality (or value), then this location deserves 5 stars. The design is impeccable, it’s never crowded, and the staff is generally very nice. The only major fail is the steam room, where the sound of the steam machine is so deafening that sitting there for more than a few minutes should be regarded as auditory torture. Other than that, no major complaints.

For the price paid at Equinox, the service provided is quite disappointing. The equipment is fair, but the gym is very crowded at peak hours, still. The towels run low at times, and filling up drink bottles is difficult as their tap for the bottle is too close to the sink to actually fit a bottle in. There is only one drink filler that actually works to height. The front desk and concierge can be quite challenging to talk to, and for the price paid (> $200 / year), you are only allowed to bring in 2 guests for the entire year. They have no flexibility around this, and are similarly unaccommodating for other requests. Jack Massari used to manage my account and was a fantastic go-to point of contact for any concerns. Since his departure from EQX, getting anything sorted has been exceedingly difficult and EQX is resistant to making any accommodations. Essentially, for a premium price paid, you are not being treated like a valued customer. Similar to budget airlines, it feels like you are still having to pay for every minimal addition of service.

Fitness and Recreation Centre is part of John Hancock Students Village, which also includes Agganis Arena ( named after BU top football/ baseball player). The centre is equipped with free weights and various physical exercise/ work-out machines, including tread- mills. Good facilities and novel rooms for individuals and groups. However, capacity is limited and leads to increased waiting time during peak hours. BU should keep the charges subsidised to encourage students for fitness. In the village context, high-rise towers for students' residence are appreciated...

There are aspects that I absolutely love; there are a few reservations that I can't ignore. Pros: The variety of machines and the multiple sections for free weights make it a haven for those who appreciate a diverse workout routine. The availability of different rooms for both individual and group exercises is a thoughtful touch. It's fantastic to have the option to isolate yourself or engage in a group workout without disrupting the standard gym flow. However, the primary drawback is the size of the gym in relation to its popularity. It often feels like the facility was designed for a much smaller student population. During peak hours (and most hours), the space becomes crowded, making it a challenge to navigate through the different workout areas. If you're accustomed to a more intimate gym experience, this may not be the ideal fit. I can't help but draw a comparison to larger, high-end gyms like Equinox, where crowding might be expected. While this gym is not exactly on par with that scene, the occasional overcrowding gives a taste of that atmosphere, which may not be everyone's cup of tea. On a positive note, the gym does offer multiple rooms for various exercises, but the issue arises when these rooms fill up quickly during busy hours (or any hours). It can be a bit frustrating when you have a specific workout in mind, and the designated areas are occupied. In conclusion, this gym has its pros and cons. If you can overlook the occasional crowding and appreciate the variety of workout options available, it's still a solid choice. While it may not be perfect, the positives do outweigh the negatives for those who are willing to adapt to a more bustling fitness environment. --- You can find me on Insta: @imdanielyoon

The Fitrec has been an amazing part during my studies at Boston University.
