Best Gym near Newark, New-jersey

I don't know why I chose this gym as my home gym! It was for convenience when I first joined but since the beginning of time the parking situation has been nothing but a headache! Today I am over it! Because of the parking I usually do other locations but time to time I like to try and work out closer to home, tried it this morning only to get frustrated over the parking again. There's no where to park on the streets, so I tried to park in the garage that's supposed to accommodate planet fitness members. Only to be told I would have to pay because my card wasn't working. I go inside planet fitness to get a new card. Then that one doesn't work, getting me into verbal arguments because this situation was holding up traffic trying to get into the parking garage. I'm so angry with the whole situation I don't even want to work out anymore!! My day started off great until this point!

This is the closest Planet Fitness to me but I prefer going out of the way to Clifton if I have the time. The machines here are old and they want you to enter your weight which I can’t stand. The bathrooms have a funky smell. It’s not that this Planet Fitness is bad it’s just not great. I prefer going to a different location. Also you have to enter via Atlantic St the Broad St door is broken and I could not get in I had to wait for someone who was leaving to get in.

I went in in June to cancel, followed PF’s rules and filled out the form. Didn’t cancel, went back in August and filled out the form again, didn’t cancel. Manager said she would call me multiple times, didn’t call me. Finally got her on the phone and was just screamed at, like literally she had to have been red in the face SCREAMING at the top of her lungs saying I was lying bc I still went using my friends guest pass under his black card account? Who screams in the phone and insults a customer? This planet fitness is also the most unkept one I’ve been to. A good bit of equipment is always tagged out but never fixed, the locals are meat heads who grunt and act a fool around you while staring, and the condition of the bathrooms.: I would rather use a truck stop. I’m not even kidding, absolutely vile, a friend of mine got a nasty foot infection from walking IN SOCKS on their floors and is contacting a lawyer about a lawsuit. She would only refund me for one month, instead do the 5 that’s has gone by since they failed to do their job correctly in June, and how hard is it to even work at a pf?? Like seriously, unprofessional, unfriendly, judgmental, and arrogant staff. Will never step foot in here again and will have my other 6 friends who currently attend to cancel their memberships as well. Never have I ever been spoken to so disrespectfully as the way I was on the phone call that should’ve happened 5 months ago. The gyms a joke, check out crunch fitness 5 minutes down the road, cheaper, better equipment, and more importantly, BETTER STAFF. The manager here was awful whoever she was, worst attitude.

How is it, they you guys place all this rule, gym wear as one. But this NYT WORKER comes in here dark shades, shirt tie, dress pants, hoodie. Comes to the basement level and workout on the equipment!?!? 3rd time I seen him here! How?

I went, worked out and used one of the massage chairs, a perk that comes with the PF Black Card and was very content (I had a dream about getting a neck massage the night before, so it hit the spot)! Lots of high school and college aged young people use this location in the summer, so it came get a bit hectic, but I tend to concentrate and avoid the crowd in order to get in a pretty intense workout. It's a good deal and so much less expensive than any of the other chain gyms. I went yesterday and there were MAYBE 20 people in the ENTIRE place. Made it easier to go from machine to machine in a hurry, so my workout time was about 15 shorter. Still, I got a good whole body workout in, showered dressed and left feeling good!

i stayed here for 3 weeks I never had a problem with anyone I leave early and come late just to avoid drama, the case worker refused to do my intake for 3 weeks but had no problem discharging me for someone harassing me. this person deliberately would come in the bathroom while I was in the shower playing my music and touched my phone I went to staff and told them im in the bathroom and she in there if she touch my phone again it will be a problem multiple times and yet again she touched my phone so I pulled her dusty wig on her head “now the person that so busy can’t do my intake stated she can press charges” I personally thought it was the same she can keep touch my things but I touched her wig it’s a problem. place filled with roaches anyways

There should be NO REASON why a shelter for families has little to no a/c. For this building to be so large ESSEX COUNTY needs to put their money into better conditions. People, ESPECIALLY children, can DIE from heat strokes & the best you can do is fans in a hallway that don’t even cool the ACTUAL rooms down where people are sleeping. Where is all this money going to? You people talk about safety yet you would have to sleep with your door open JUST to get a cool breeze WITH your children. The RAs are friendly.

Where would the community be without the YMCA to help in time of need? The Bible says: Don't despise small beginnings. This place is a blessing for many. Ms. Elmore, leadership and staff go above and beyond to make sure individuals are housed, safe and the facility is cleaned daily, as well as to help and support with individuals gain housing externally. Adhering to the rules is necessary, being considerate of others in close proximity and keeping personal space clean can help management with pest control and smooth the transition during difficult times. It's unfortunate that the state of the art work out space, pool, gym, day care and activity spaces was forced to close due to a lack of community involvement. It would be helpful if additional funds/grants tbe given to the facility to help with continual upgrades when needed and to provide air conditioning throughout the building during the summer. Realy bad and dirty, i dont know how some people can live like that. It's like a walking dead. Also waste everywhere, smell bad and looks like a ghetto place, really ghetto. bathrooms disgusting 🤮 they will put families in a really small unit that you will think you living in a storage unit share kitchen people will literally walk around with no shoes or even in just a towel on management talk trash about everybody coming through they don’t like seeing new people !!!!!! If you think you safe here you must be out of your mind a baby passed away here and a lot of people is suing this shelter mainly because some residents get assaulted by staff or people who live here it may look like peaches and roses when you first come in but wait till you see a mouse coming from your wall

Take your chances all up to you I enjoyed and loved it at my time of stay being there until ....... I am safe. Also, I want to thank all staffs and well as the workers at yw/mca kept up a very clean environment all areas and mostly checking up wellness keeping residents safer loved

I was a basic member first. Until one day I park into one of the management parking spots about 2 years ago. I was brand new and some guy came YELLING AT ME and said "Didn't you see that it says management?" I was like "What the heck?" Then he asked me "Are you a member?" I said "YES". I moved out of that spot, Your parking lot is not too big. Kinda tight. But I don't think that's the way to be talking to the customers. Never complained about it. Another ocassion somebody behind me walked in the gym, and I was called very RUDE by some girl. And I threatened with canceling my subscription. I don't need to sneaked people inside your gym. And if from the very beginning you give people some paper with the rules so that they can remember and keep it in mind that it would be better. Later I upgraded to VIP and was bringing my girlfriend until some guy tried to talk to her and we had a problem. I even complained to the counter. But nothing was done about it. The only thing I heard "Ohh he has been coming here for 15 years". I had been travel across the US and everytime I was in NJ I was visiting this gym. I canceled my subscription and after becoming a member for less than a month I upgraded to VIP again. I would give you 4 stars only because I like your gym. But conditioned to future reviews.

Let me start from when you when in the door, people behind the counter most of the time occupied on gossip or other nonsenses than actually greet the members. I am not going to say all them are like that but for the most part 8 out of 10 you wont even get a straight face from them, they act like they are doing you favor. The machines are decent for the most part although as in most gym weight are all over the place, however in this gym the stuff doesnt really worry about put them back in place. I critique that aspect because I actually go to Union and Elizabeth often and in this gym that does not happen, at least all the occasions I been there which is quit a lot. Music is always too loud in the afternoon, I have complained but no one does anything about it, I have to listen to my music with the volume all the way up on my earphones. The worst part of all are the freelance “trainers”, too many of them and there couple that are very/extremely loud, people that goes to this gym knows who I am talking about. Not only too load but also talk behind other members back criticizing their workout or straight being disrespectful. Sometimes I rather drive farther to Union then coming to this gym

Great place to workout this is the second time I’ve joined this gym. On and off it’s being almost 12 years. The help is really nice and polite the place is clean. And Cameron made me a shake the other day that was amazing. Great job everyone keep it up.

Just Talking on the phone with Jennifer made me want to go to this gym. Over a yr or so, I've been in an depressant stage and I looked and called places but didn't feel comfortable enough to gym. Their approach abt explaining things was so off and understandable. Talking to Jennifer I felt at eased and good abt joining. Being a single parent, going thru things and feeling insecure she really made me feel good. Haven't started yet but I'm on my own. Will try to update journey

Decent place to get a workout in near EWR. They do $20 day passes, though not advertised + Lots of free weights and machines with plates Enough squat racks Sauna in locker rooms Fair number of cardio machines too Clean: reasonably free of dust and clean locker rooms too (much cleaner than your NY Sports Club or 24 hr fitness or LA fitness or planet fitness) Courteous front desk staff and trainers working with clients in gym Easy to get to from EWR in less than 10 mins by bus, taxi, or rideshare - Some machines in disrepair and in need of maintenance eg broken buttons on treadmills, which are generally fairly old (~20 yrs) and aren't calibrated very well (on one I got on 4% incline was actually 0%; 0% was actually -3.5%)

Been coming here since 2021 and no complaints! All of the employees are super helpful and friendly like Jorm, Nate (if my memory serves me right!), Ty! They keep the space super clean and are always there to help.

A lot of damaged equipment and the pool facilities are down. It’s been four-five months since I first signed up. The only thing good about La membership is that I get to visit other facilities. Defeats the purpose of having a gym near you if you have to go to others to use the amenities. They asked me last month to write a review. At first they offered to write it for me, but that’s the last thing they’ll do. This will change once I start to see some improvement.

I'm a happy customer here for a little over a yead and will stay so long as I live close by. One employee particularly, Andrea provides fantastic service. I had a few questions and would not normally expect the time/attention she provided. There are lots of choices of gym and that type of care is what sets LA fitness here apart.

Workers are super friendly and attentive. Way more spacious and clean than most gym locations i’ve been to.

I’m a regular at this gym since a couple of years. Staff are super friendly, I have taken personal training and got great results. They recently started bootcamp and HIIT sessions which is great! Love this gym. Shoutout to Tyrel!

I love this place! Love the pool except more lanes need to be opened. And they did open an extra lane the last 2 mos. Maybe consider cutting the lanes in half . The life guards are nice and ON IT! I really can’t begin to describe their diligence in pool monitoring and smooth, interpersonal actions with one another to do their jobs. Once on a cloudy day, it seemed as if they were running a military operation! BUT , the SHOWER WATER IS TOO HOT!! And the changing room is dark, could use better lighting. And stop telling people about ‘our pool’!!! There is an indoor pool in the KNECK at 226 Rome St. Tell people about that one.

I never played with a men that cry so much like why man’s that work there get mad because I said just hoop then kicked me out like grow up works abuse his power then he all up in my face and his breath stinks

Horrible experience! I arrived on Saturday at 10:30 am to swim after they had been closed to find out there was some type of tournament going on! So I jump in deep and was attacked verbally by another race of folks and when I approached the the ghetto worker she did not care and I was asked to leave! Being a homeowner in Newark disappointes me that other not part of our community can come swim and have game and I pay taxes and could not swim but was asked leave.

Went there for the first time 8/5/17. Definitely wasn't what I expected. Facility was super clean. Pool, restroom, and changing rooms were impecable. The only thing that messed up the facility was the life guards. Don't get me wrong they were very nice people but they weren't paying much attention to the kids swimming. They were too busy joking and talking to each other and playing around with some of the kids there. I feel that as a life guard you need to be more professional and watch these kids in the pool because they are there to save a life if a child drowning. I will come again. Hopefully next time they do pay more attention.

I lived in Newark, New Jersey (2012-2017) before returning to Texas, and I must say the JFK Aquatic Center is truly a gem in the city. Whether a leisurely swim or relieving stress, the aquatic center offers fond memories of a retractable roof stadium, where the lifeguards converted 25 meter swim lanes to 50 meter lanes, June to September, annually. Thanks to all the staff (lifeguards Arius, Mike, and Clarence (who passed away) for your work and kindness. Respectfully, Roshin

Great gym! There's a section for free weights - perfect for deadlifts. There's also a cardio section and weight machines. Water fountains, showers, and washrooms are also available. Front desk is friendly.

Amazing fitness and sports center for NJIT students. Heated swimming pool, racquet ball court, inside running tracks, gym, basketball court and soccer field to immerse yourself during your time at NJIT.

if someone goes at 8am right when they open is it going to be empty or people are already waiting? I like this gym better than the wec but sometimes is really crowded

This gym changed my life. I came in at 260 lbs and now after 5 years I’m still boxing and now competing at the 165 lbs weight class .

Awesome place and workout. You are drenched once you’re finished. Owner is dedicated and truly cares. He makes this place a safe space for everyone—especially youth in our community.

I had been a loyal member at Evox Fitness for a year. Unfortunately, my experience with their customer service has been disappointing. I submitted my cancellation notice on the day I received my 11 month billing receipt via email. Strategically they send it 29 days before the next billing, instead of 30 (same day). I requested cancellation on that day (29 days) before my next billing date-just one day short of their 30-day policy-and they rigidly refused to accommodate this minor difference. Despite hardly using the facilities for months as I was traveling abroad and moving to a new house. they still charged me for the last billing cycle. I reached out, hoping for a gesture of goodwill and common decency, but flexibility and understanding were clearly not priorities. They are now looking to do the same with my wife who is trying to cancel and has a few months left on her contract, looking to make her uphold it to the end, even tho we moved 18 miles away and the drive to and from the gym would be an hour. They do not consider this far enough… who wants to spend an hour in the car just to go to the gym? Common sense is completely null here. This is a poor way to treat members who pay a steep price tag for a mediocre gym membership to begin with, If you're considering this gym, be aware: their policies are strict, and member satisfaction seems low on their list.

Poor customer service and the woman at the front desk is arrogant and rude. Told me my membership was successfully cancelled then turned around and claimed that I owed 3 months. I was charged while out of the country and recovering from a surgery. I tried to ask if they could put my account on hold until I return so that I could at least pay for a membership that I would be using and the woman refused to come to an agreement with me.

Staff is very good and polite. Gym is new, very clean, all new machines a lot of machines...It's amazing 😃😃💪💪. Instructors are present all the time for any advice or suggestions. It's a great place to workout. Greetings from Bo 😏

Genuinely one of the best gyms I’ve been to. Innovative machines and high quality equipment is definitely something they do not lack. Amazing atmosphere, respectful public, plus dumbbells that go up to 200 which is great compared to other gyms with at most 100s. Definitely recommend!

Great gym, but if you plan on working out at night after a stressful work shift be prepared: the dance class music is so loud it fills up the entire facility. Sometimes it's upbeat but sometimes it's just terrible. Don't count on your headphones/airpods. The music is so loud it's all you'll hear until 9pm. Someone do something about it!!!

Used to be a really good gym with mad bodybuilders and everything(Really inspiring), but it really fell off a mountain in the last few years. The culture is trash. Now it’s just a lot of teenagers and soccer moms Working out with bad form… THE GOOD: The machines are actually pretty good I must say And I do like the staff they are courteous and helpful. Newark doesn’t really have much to offer fitness wise so there’s not too many better options Especially at this price point. I just wish it would be better. A lot of potential I will admit…

This gym is dripping with potential, there is some seriously sweet equipment and the space is laid out in a way that should perfect... however, the lack of organization, the lack of certain staple machines, the cluter of duplicate unnecessary machines, and lack of cleanliness brings this way down. No one re racks weights, there is only 2 cable racks in the gym, but about 35 different chest press machines. But again some seriously cool equipment if you care to dig around and find it. Also why is there equipment set up on the turf pad, farmers carry and sleds set up to use the turf pad but there is no room to use them

I go into the gym and ask if I can see the gym and equipment. The uneducated, no class having around the way filet working the counter points to the security monitors. Confused I asked " I can't get a tour? " she pointed at the monitors again and told me I can see the gym that way. UNBELIEVABLE!! Don't get me started on the treatment two black friends of mine received one time when trying to use the free day pass. The person at the counter said to them the pass wasn't valid on a salary a Saturday and proceeded to charge them for the day. Now mind you I called and was told the free day passes are good on Saturdays. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE

I’ve been paying for my membership for 3 years and I had the option to bring a person as I was paying an additional fee. Today when I entered the gym in the morning the girl told me there was a change of owners and I could no longer bring a person. NOBODY reached out to let me know of the changes and they continued billing me the additional charge. Being that I payed in advance they could of notify my and let us work out today instead she charged my friend the day pass and told me I would continue paying the same price. I never go to the gym in the morning to avoid the extremely rude girl at the front desk who claims to be the manager. I didn’t cancel my membership before because of the previous owner being a complete sweetheart.

My membership got cancelled, I didn’t receive a call, no text, no email. The owner has refused to contact me and, the manager he said his name is “Keith” couldn’t help or provide information how to contact the owner.

I have been a member at this gym for years. You will not find a better place to work out. It is huge inside with plenty of space for everyone. The owners are kind and great people. Best of all they understand fitness. They keep the place clean and up to date with the best new machines. There is also a huge new parking lot out front. If you know the area, that’s hard to come by. Highly highly recommended.

I went there for information and the front desk attendant, Diego, was very prompt, resourceful, and courteous. The plans were affordable and this place offer many different options. Obviously, the annual plan offers the lowest cost but I was a bit hesitant about the $250 cancelation fee in case I am unable to go to the gym later this year due to traveling. They also don't offer time off in case we go on vacation, we still have to pay the $170 monthly fee with instructor even though we are not using their service. Overall, I think the gym is clean and well maintained and equipped. Bathroom is not very comfy but they have a small sauna which I may use it. As of now, I have not decided to sign up for a plan yet.

I just called this place to ask some questions and person rudely hung up phone and said we don’t give information on phone. I tried calling back and they will not answer phone. Absolutely rude and unprofessional and would never join a gym that offers that type of customer service!

Very friendly and experience instructors, highly recommended! Sir Vinicius is great with kids, his teaching style motivates the students to better themselves rather than fear making mistakes. His adult class is very good too, he focuses on self defense and fitness, and does a really good job helping everyone individually.

Fantastic School!!!! Master Vinny is extremely patient and knows how to communication in a way that children instantly respond to. I highly suggest Team Raposa Taekwondo school to any mother or father who wants to protect his or her child from the dangers of every day life. Every child will learn discipline, self respect, courage & confidence.
