I recently had the pleasure of attending a chest, back, and abs class at Barry’s, with the instructor Josey and it was an experience like no other! From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere that set the tone for the session. The studio was immaculate, reflecting their commitment to cleanliness, which made me feel comfortable and safe. Our instructor was nothing short of amazing—motivating and charismatic, Josey brought an infectious energy to the class that kept us all engaged and pushing our limits. His personalized encouragement made everyone feel like part of a team, and it was truly uplifting to see classmates cheering each other on throughout the workout. The music selection was perfectly curated, driving the intensity and keeping our spirits high. It was impossible not to get lost in the rhythm while working up a sweat! Overall, the seamless customer experience, combined with the supportive community and high-energy atmosphere, made this class a standout. I left feeling accomplished and excited for my next session. If you’re looking for a challenging workout that also feels like a celebration, I highly recommend checking out Barry’s and speak with Lucas who truly set the tone for my Barry’s experience!

I had an amazing experience at Barry's Downtown Austin! I took a Lower Body Burn class with Phillip, and it was incredible—challenging yet so rewarding. Phillip's energy and guidance kept me motivated the entire time. After class, I stopped by the Fuel Bar for a smoothie, and it was the perfect post-workout treat. Haley was awesome, taking the time to share details about upcoming classes and exciting things to look forward to. Her enthusiasm and knowledge made the visit even better! If you're looking for a killer workout and a welcoming atmosphere, Barry's is the place to be. Can't wait to come back

The best workout in Austin! I’ve been coming to Barry’s for years starting at the old location off of Lamar. Like most people, I have a very busy life schedule and when I find time to work out, I want it to be intense and productive which is why I go to Barry’s. I’ve taken all of the instructors and they are all top-notch and the front desk staff is always friendly and accommodating.

I recently took my first Barry’s workout class with Josey, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience! Josey was incredibly attentive throughout the entire session, regularly checking in on me and making sure I felt comfortable with the workout. His encouragement and support made the challenging class much more enjoyable. If you're new to Barry's or just looking for a great instructor, I highly recommend taking a class with him!

Kenzie was super welcoming of me in my first ever Barry’s class. I loved that she explained the workout to me and gave me a shout out during class :-)

Ive tried other gyms and always come back to Golds. The outdoor amenities are awesome. Having the opportunity to work out in and outdoors is a huge perk all in itself. I’ve taken classes here and I have seen progress with my health and fitness . The lockers, bathrooms, sauna are always clean. I’ve been a member here for years. I love that the members here are serious about their time there. workout, get it done. Just a great gym vibe.

I love this gym! It is very clean--it's kind of a miracle how clean the locker rooms are (at least the women's) I never see paper towels on the floor or icky showers. The main floor is clean, well lit, approachable. The best thing though is the staff--I love the trainers they have and I love that the trainers teach classes. I have gotten to know so many of them as class instructors and it's so nice just to see them around the gym cheering you on. I really like the studio membership upgrade with the Gold's Burn and Gold's Fit classes. Burn is a 50/50 cardio and weights class and Fit is a CrossFit style class (without barbells). I love the burn class, the energy, the people, the trainers, the workouts. Honestly I'm surprised by how much I'm enjoying this gym. I've been going consistently for over a year now and I've never had that kind of streak with any other exercise plan before. It just feels like everyone is rooting for my success instead of the competition/showing off I've seen at other gyms.

Wow, I feel sick having walked in to this gym. I just returned to Golds after past memberships in Bee Cave and the YMCA. This is so close to my home but I can’t pay a business for services when it lacks a basic commitment to cleanliness. These photos were taken at 9:30 pm in the men’s locker room. Two employees working from what I could see. Cancelling tomorrow.

ATTENTION SOUTH AUSTIN: Crunch fitness charges less and gives way more!! They are opening location in Kyle this October! Can’t wait! I pay more $$ at golds, for less amenities/perks, at this gym than any gym I’ve ever been a part of. I pay $40 for a month to month membership. Crunch charges $26, and they give you towels. At Golds, I once asked the front desk for a towel, and they told me that I have to pay extra for “towel service.” For $26 a month at crunch, I get unlimited guest passes to bring a friend. At Golds, I was told when I signed up that I could bring a guest once every 6 months. I brought a guest, and he was told the next time he came he has to pay $15. I asked if I bring him again in 6 months (since I’m supposed to get 1 guest pass every 6 months) if he would have to pay, and I was told yes. I can only bring a different guest once every 6 months. This gym is not nice enough to be that exclusive. They don’t even give you towels unless you pay extra lol. Also for $14 less/month, I get tanning and red light therapy at crunch. I cannot WAIT for the kyle location to open so I can leave this overpriced lame gym behind!

The “no bag” policy only seems to apply if you’re a woman. I watch men and staff walk around with LARGE bags 24/7. Contrary to Moses’ response, men and staff carry around giant bags around the gym daily, i clocked 4 just today. I got a “talking to” by a staff member several weeks ago but never see any of these men being confronted about it. Additionally, if you like to hip thrust this is not the gold’s for you. None of the boxes are low enough for optimal position, even for me and im 5’8 so it’s not possible to lift heavy. The benches are not in a convenient spot for getting them to the platforms either so im frequently forced to use the bench press fixed benches.

I started at Tao back in June, and I can say that since I started I have had and seen vast improvement, with everything from daily basic actions of either picking things up or doing vigorous activities. My first and best feature and function I noticed after my first month of training was my posture. I use to walk and slouch so bad, but shortly after starting with Matt at Tao it improved greatly! Now I walk tall and proudly, even when I'm hauling heavy backpacks from class to class all over campus. Of all the places you could go I would suggest here. Matt is a awesome trainer who will not only teach you how and why to do things, but he will explain the process and break it down for you best as possible. Not to mention everyone there is friendly and welcoming when you walk in the door. They also offer different workshops of all kinds, on occasion they have amazing guest speakers to come in and not just talk but physically work with you on certain things depending the topic. Plus when Matt plays the gong from time to time it's super relaxing. I would highly suggest coming here to start your path to true body and mind strengthening.

I've been a student of Matt Fuhrmann at Tao Health and Fitness for about a year now. I can honestly say that Matt has provided the best fitness instruction from any trainer I've worked with in Austin, bar none! In the beginning, he did a great job screening my initial fitness level and teaching me corrective exercises to address imbalances, weak points and injuries. From there, he's done a great job guiding me through 3DX and bodyweight exercises to build up foundational strength. This is the hardest I've worked for the longest period of time without injuring myself. I'm stronger than I've ever been and getting stronger all the time. Matt's classes are always fun and engaging. I get tons of personal attention. Matt is always cheerful, engaging and attentive. The class sizes are building steadily, and there's a real sense of family and community. I would highly recommend Matt and Tao Health and Fitness to anyone looking to address nagging injuries and attain their highest potential of strength and fitness.

Since i have been going to Tao health & fitness i have seen a great difference in my flexibility, endurance, strength and mental clarity.MATT does an amazing job on teaching each technique and follows up with me on refining my movement to eliminate compensation. I feel very fortunate in taking these classes. i highly recommend his training. He is very attentive and cares about your results. .

I am a 61 year old grandmother. I came to Matt after a total hip replacement and subsequent physical therapy had failed to restore my ability to move with ease and joy. The pain and limited mobility were impacting every aspect of my life; and I had become focused on just getting through each day. My first class was disappointing, as could not do any of the exercises without pain. Matt continually worked with my limitations, constantly revising my individual plan. It was six weeks before I could leave my training not in tears. With Matt's persistence and patience, I slowly began to feel real improvement. I have been working with Matt for four months, now, and I can work in my garden, play on the floor with my grandchildren, and walk for as long as I want - without pain. When I walked through the door of Tao Health & Fitness in January I was unable to walk without the aid of a cane. Now, my daughter has trouble keeping up with me as I sprint through the Zilker Botanical Gardens. I have a long way to go, and a lot yet to learn; but, this has become an exciting journey to wholeness. This practice has put the joy back into my life on all levels. This is an investment of energy, time and money; but I am worth it. Thank you, Matt, for helping me to reclaim my life.

I started training at Tao Health and Fitness because I was tired of the gym and was looking for a type of exercise that would more accurately address structural imbalances that I've had for many years. My right shoulder was noticeably lower than my left with atrophy of my neck and shoulder muscles. My condition was the result of a car wreck back in 1999 that left me with herniated disks in my neck, diminished motor function and sensation in my right shoulder. I began to see improvement after three months of training. I've been training at the Tao for over a year now and my shoulders are level and equal in strength. Diminished sensation at the top of my right shoulder is the only lingering issue. Over the years I've had massage, chiropractic, and acupuncture treatments that have helped, but didn't resolve the atrophy and lack of motor function. I'm grateful to Matt for his patient help guiding me through this process. You should give the Tao a try. They're a great group of knowledgeable professionals.

Edit: The gym post fake reviews. Beware. The gym serves its purpose but has room for major improvement. If you're someone who only goes to the gym for hypertrophy and mostly uses machines, then this gym will probably be a good fit for you. I will say that the floor plan was poorly thought out and they put too many machines in there. You often have to weave between machines just to get to the mens locker room. If you're someone into barbell work or sports training then this gym is mid at best. They DO have more squat racks / "power cage" than most gyms. However, the weights are seldom organized and often just laying all over the floor- literally. They did invest in upright weight racks but then had the bright idea to stack the heaviest weights on them so trying to get the 45 or 55lb weights is inefficient. Additionally, these racks are also disorganized and you often have to remove 3-4 training weights just to get to the weight you want. The turf field is cool but is often littered with miscellaneous equipment that doesn't belong there or influencers filming. So trying to do sprints or sled workouts is not always a viable option. Beyond that the gym can be dirty. It's not uncommon to see trash by the squat racks, empty plastic bottles on the machines - sometimes for days at a time, and used paper towels just thrown on the floor. I have photos of everything mentioned in this review, but think that would be overkill. Anyone who has visited the gym or frequents the barbell area and turf knows this is just an objective review. With that said, this is just meant to be constructive criticism - but I will admit it was spurred by a feeling of being "over it". The main reason for working out at a gym rather than your home or apartment is for convenience . The gym meets this benchmark in some areas more than others. Are there plenty of machines and weights? - yes. Are the weights / space organized? - no. Is the place clean? - some days more than others. *edit: I will be adding photos to this review.

Edit: Revising to one star for the blatant fake reviews they’re posting. Dozens of 5-star reviews from new accounts on the same day — doesn’t take a genius to figure out what they’re doing. Focus on improving your gym. Original review: The insane volume of the music continues to be a thorn in my side. It’s bugs me even more to see basically everyone complaining about it but the owners refuse to budge on this. Why?! Men’s bathroom needs work as well. Often has an extremely pungent smell and they just aren’t cleaning the floors nearly often enough. Soap dispensers are often empty or broken. Bathroom stalls don’t lock. Overall really gross. Cold plunges were promised when I joined spring ‘24, still nowhere to be found going into 2025. Not sure I’d trust them to keep them clean anyways. On the good side, there’s a ton of machines here and plenty of squat racks. I don’t really feel like the gym ever gets unbearably busy during peak hours and it becomes a ghost town after 9pm if you like night workouts. Overall OK gym. I’d put up with the quirks for $35/mo but it’s grating at $70/mo.

My favorite gym in Austin! Literally it’s like someone had unlimited budget and got every machine you could ever want. Only feedback would be fixing the always broken cardio machines and making sure to up keep the bathrooms, they usually aren’t the cleanest. Besides that I would 100% suggest and recommend this gym!

The House of Gainz, aka The HOG, is a one of a kind gym experience, with two locations, one in the North Austin (Pflugerville Tech Ridge) and (Georgetown TX) areas of Austin. Both gyms foster a welcoming environment for all gym goers, but don't confuse either of these gyms with the likes of Crunch Fitness, Planet Fitness, Lifetime Fitness, or even Golds Gym. These gyms foster the equipment and knowledge and clientele from beginners to the IFBB Pro, Olympian level bodybuilders! Each location has personal trainers should you need a little extra motivation.

Awesome staff! Everyone is friendly and motivating! Clean place. Honestly best equipment I’ve ever had in a gym. You defiantly get what you pay for. Sauna is nice and hot. Also I personally love the music they play. (That’s just me)

My friend and I came for a Silks class and had the best time! She’s a beginner and Silks can be intimidating at that level, but she had such a blast with our instructor and came away, loving it! I also had a great time practicing my skills and learning new methods at a new studio! I would highly recommend that Circus! Such a warm and welcome, welcoming environment!

Started areal silks as a nice way to get in some exercise while learning a new skill. Was welcomed with warm smiles and friendly faces. Unfortunately, due to an unexpected knee injury, I was not able to continue, but several months I consistently went were incredible. The instructors were great with working with people of any experience level and made the classes so much fun. It was the highlight of my week! Can't thank them enough for everything!
