Friendly staff. We enjoy working out here. The Ceiling Fans need Cleaned they are very dusty. And the music they play is great but they need to turn the Volume up some.

Went here on a tour to see if I liked the gym and amenities and definitely love the place. The price is great for all the available things. I will definitely be coming here.

The Gregory Family YMCA located in Lancaster County, SC is a great place to exercise be it weight training or swimming in the large (25 Meter) heated Swimming Pool. But I have a major issue with the Pool not being open to the public even for 1/2 of the Pool or at minimum 1 of 2 Lanes for the public during the “learn to swim” school year program. That to me makes this facility useless as that is when I can work out. Even having only the deep end (the kids NEVER) use that part of the pool would be acceptable to me. I can’t stress how many people will see my review (over 25 Million hits to my reviews) so please take my suggestion very seriously! The pool isn’t available already plenty. Keep it partly open for your members!!!! There are Swim Lessons given here which are very affordable. The facilities are a bit aged as is the building, but the staff maintains it well and it’s clean. Staff is very friendly and helpful. This facility features Basketball, Weight room, exercise classes including Zumba, Squash and Pickle ball. I would like however to see the shower facilities include a soap holder for any self brought shampoos etc. Kids are welcome.

Poorly handled experience Most know USCL is next door to the Gregory Family YMCA— walked there frequently between classes while I was at USCL. I was at USCL during the transition from the Gregory Center to Gregory Family YMCA— shows my knowledge. During college I exercised and took classes (Zumba, Yoga) at the former Gregory Center and then Gregory Family YMCA. I even paid for an extended membership on my own, and even a locker, too. Speed time up by five years, graduation and covid fill that gap of time— I also went to Indian Land YMCA during that time for the pool. I had applied for positions at the Gregory Family YMCA and no communication between that timeframe. I have a bachelor’s degree and didn’t even qualify for PT “membership associate.” Applied at the YMCA again just a couple weeks ago, I finally got a call. A female representative communicated with me for a few moments about the role, all good. The whole conversation came to a halt when the female representative informed me that “YMCA policy requires 3-5 references to work at the Y.” I replied I had none, literally none. Thirty minutes later I was rejected online. Could have simply saved time by about references first. What is incredibly odd: I can be a YMCA member willy-nilly but I try to be a PT employees with a bachelor’s degree from a college next door, while having said all I said above, and, magically, I don’t qualify for a PT position. Wow. Records show every detail. Why not require new members to bring references, too? Okay, I thought on my experience. Thought hard. I called the Upper Palmetto Y in Rock Hill, SC (headquarters so to speak). Spoke with another (fairly rude) female, and I told the same story. I explained the oddity of references, and told her I am disappointed. Her response: “we ask for references to check for sex offenders and such.” Sex offenders?? No formal background check? So Jane Doe says John Smith isn’t a sex offender and such, and two or three others say the same thing about John Smith— instantly, John Smith is a good guy? What logic is that for safety? Why would I pay to be a member at a place that runs off of connections for employees and willy-nilly for fellow members? Heck, I might have had a creep as an employee, too, based on that said system explained to me. I am acceptable to make money off of but not work PT? You can’t complain about an issue at a YMCA— no headquarters. Makes me question employee or member issues or complaints. I simply didn’t like what I discovered and how I was handled. My experience forever secured my future dealings with a YMCA, especially Upper Palmetto YMCA- never joining again. Bachelor’s degree and no job access. Heck, USCL students could go to the YMCA for free— I still have my card and paperwork. Be warned, folks. I am sick of odd experiences and remaining silent to the issues. Society can run better and should. What a major disappointing discovery.
