Best Y’s in Charlotte are Lake Norman and Dowd. Keith isn’t the cleanest as you can see in the video. They have physical training unit attached to the gym and on specific days of the week they have high school athletes taking up the multipurpose area where you have the squat racks and turf pad. The gym also doesn’t let you drop heavy weight on the Rogue platforms that are specifically designed for weight dropping on them. So if you’re a cross fitter wanting to do max weight cleans or deadlifts this isn’t the gym.

I had the worst experience yesterday. The staff is truly incompetent and incapable of doing their job correctly. For context I am a nationwide member and travel a lot. So typically anytime I go to a ymca outside of my city for some reason it’s such a lengthy process for them to check me in. Yesterday the lady at the front desk was asking me questions and she started asking more questions than usual, so I said “ Is there something wrong? I’ve been to this specific location all the time and they always let me in. I don’t know what the problem is. “ She then said she didn’t know what was going on and there wasn’t a manager at the moment so she would let me in. 10 minutes into my workout her and the manager come to get me telling me I have to leave and everyone is staring at me like I did something wrong. The manager (Allena or Ellena I can’t remember her name I believe it started with an A) then lies to me saying she spoke to my home YMCA and says I got kicked out of the family plan I’m in ( I’m in college so the account holder is my mom) She told me that I needed to grab my things and leave the facility. She also told me that next time I wanted to come in it would be $20. She didn’t allow me to explain myself or the situation. So I told her that I can call the ymca myself in her office to verify if that was true or not. I called my home ymca and verified that what the manager had told me was a lie. All they said was that there was an issue with the card on the account and it was expired but as soon as it got updated they would be able to process payment. I got the card payment updated and they had no choice but to let me back in. I believe they were trying to make it seem like I got kicked out of the plan so I could buy my own membership with them. It was a very humiliating and uncomfortable experience. As there were multiple people in the gym who saw me get kicked out and the staff tried to make it seem like I could not afford a gym membership. I felt discriminated against.

Great place for a swim, exercises, gym workout and many other sessions. Clean locker rooms, clean restrooms. Lifeguard on duty in swimming pool. Lot of parking. There is also a kids playground. Memberships required. Non members can enroll for a higher amount.

I’m here at the ymca right now, it’s very nice and clean, i don’t know what the other reviewers are talking about. This place is very spacious and well kept.

I’ve been to three different Y’s in the area, and this is my favorite. I really wanted to give five stars, but two things held me back. But please read to the end because there are positives. 1. I think it is unreasonable for half of the pool to be closed during water aerobics when the class doesn’t even take up but a fourth of the pool when they’re in session. With the physical therapy I have to do, I need to be able to walk down the stairs, and I take up about two feet of space around me. 2. EVERY staff member has been wonderful EXCEPT the water aerobics teacher that made a big deal of getting out of “her pool” when her class was in session. The life guard that was there at the time was nice and every other one I’ve come into contact with was wonderful. The pool manager was very nice to me and told me how to reserve lanes since I’m a nation wide member and can’t book online. Front staff have been great. It’s sad that one employee and experience can make someone feel attached. My suggestion is, if you travel, no matter what the pool schedule says, still call them before you come. You never know how each Y handles pool rules.
